About Woodruff puppies

Puppies will inherit a lot from their parents. We use the best quality adults in our breeding program to ensure the puppies receive a strong body, mind, temperament, and freedom from inheritable diseases.Woodruff puppies are packed with an enormous amount of potential. They excel as family companions where gentleness with children is a must, and are sturdy and intelligent for other athletic pursuits like obedience, agility, etc. Woodruff prices are competitive, whether comparing to other area show/hobby breeders or when considering the extra lifetime veterinary costs required for puppies from breeders who don’t screen parents.

Puppy Culture (PC) is a breakthrough method of raising puppies, training & living with dogs, based on expert behavioral and veterinary sciences.  The foundation is laid by the breeder, and the benefits are enjoyed by the new owners!

The results are most dramatic as a lifelong benefit when breeders start PC before the litter is even born, but adult dogs introduced to it later have remarkable results too.

The method is “force-free” and yet builds a foundation to minimize behavior problems that cause owners to respond with punishment. Also, the puppies will go to their new homes with a headstart on skills like Sit, Come, Down, & Leash Walking.

Your job is easier and the puppy is happier.  Win-win!

How can puppy owners use Puppy Culture after take-home?

PC helps people understand how dogs learn and communicate, and how to harness that knowledge into positive techniques to handle everyday life… including potty training, walking on leash, biting, quiet crate-time, manners and skills, getting into mischief, etc.

PC will help you make the most of the first few weeks after take-home when the puppy’s socialization phase is still open.

PC also teaches the right way to use a clicker (no, not like Chris Pratt in Jurassic World lol) - it’s a super-powerful tool your puppy will already understand and love!

I’m encouraging serious inquirers to check out Puppy Culture because...

I’ll be putting significant effort into raising the litters with this method, with the expectation they will be easier for their new owners to raise, and have greater potential for a richer life. I’ve personally seen a big positive change in my own dogs since starting PC, and l’m very excited for others to have the same experience.

My wish is that all my puppies will get to live with people willing to put in a little effort in order to understand them and reap the rewards.

The concepts for puppy owners aren't difficult, and I believe the type of families I typically choose for my puppies are likely to find them easy and exciting to use.

Puppy Culture can be learned right at home by DVD and online resources, and the puppies and I will also help you learn with hands-on practice.

Special offer for my puppies’ future homes:

If you can check off this list, I will cover 100% of the film cost as a deduction from the puppy sale price.  While I will show you the puppies learning as they grow, and help you learn too, there’s no way I can cover the method as eloquently as the film!

(1) Get ahold of a copy of Puppy Culture, The Film on DVD/Bluray or Video on Demand

- order one from PC and I’ll deduct the price from the puppy sale price

- get one from me at a discount price and I’ll deduct the price from the puppy sale

- have your local library get a copy

(2) By the time the puppies are 21 days old, finish watching all sections listed in the Puppy Culture Essentials Playlist for Puppy Owners  so you can understand what’s happening as the main bulk of PC is being taught).

(3) Come to my house for at least one practice session with the litter before take-home.

Let’s make this journey together!

Click here to watch 3 great short videos on Puppy Culture’s website that will introduce you to the program.

If those videos excite you, then then get ahold of their core film, make some popcorn, learn and enjoy!

It’ll show you everything I'll teach the litter, and how to continue after taking a puppy home.

Who do I sell to?

Woodruff sells puppies to private families only (no sales to pet shops, auction, commercial breeders, and I must meet each family member). Great care is taken to ensure each puppy goes to a “forever” home at an early age.

All sales transactions occur in my home. No exceptions.

Because Woodruff Shelties is a small hobby kennel, we will average around one, possibly two, litters per year. The number of puppies is always fewer than the number of families waiting, so there won't be a puppy available for every family who submits a questionnaire for consideration.

How I match puppies with homes

1) Woodruff Shelties always gets first pick(s) of puppies to keep for show. These decisions are typically made around 8 weeks old, but might be made later.

After that decision, the remainder of the puppies will be matched with homes. Puppies will be released for take-home at 10 weeks of age.

2) Show homes and performance (actively competing Conformation, Agility, Obedience, etc) homes will be matched second.

3) Pet puppies will be matched last.  Specific puppies will be offered to specific families based on best temperament and capability match.

Sale price

Price for pet puppies is $2900.  Cash, check, and credit card accepted; full payment is due before the puppy leaves my home.  Please inquire for show puppy price and terms.  10% deposit required if invited onto a Short List for a litter once pregnancy is confirmed, and is only refundable if Woodruff Shelties cuts the family from the Short List (ie. no surviving litter, small litter, discovers the home is unsuitable).

This sale price allows this hobby to be self-sustaining for costs (based on analysis of average historic costs related to raising litters).

Buying a puppy from a show or hobby breeder gives you the peace of mind that your new family member has a predictable/gentle temperament which will be safe around your loved ones, the intelligence to be easily trained, good health and a likelihood for a long happy lifespan.

Ironically, paying a higher purchase price is often most economical. Lower-cost puppies are often suffering from parasites, genetic disease, and structural weaknesses… The additional veterinary costs will grow to be higher than the purchase price of a healthy puppy, often within a couple short years (not to mention the accompanying heartache).

Supporting show/hobby breeders is a very effective way to hurt puppy mills. However, the current political climate has focused disfavor towards all breeders, and fewer new people are joining this special and very rewarding hobby. Without show/hobby breeders, the only puppies which would be available would be from still-unfound puppy mills or backyard breeders.

Overview of contract terms

1) All puppies come with a guarantee of good health upon transfer to the new owner, and a guarantee of freedom from inherited diseases up to 2 years of age (most inherited diseases appear by this age; after this, an injury is more likely to blame than genetics). This guarantee is null and void if the owner does not maintain a WSAVA Body Condition Score between 4-6 (1=emaciated, 9=obese).

2) All companion puppies will be sold under a contract prohibiting breeding. To optimize lifetime health for the dog, the buyer must agree to leave the dog intact (no surgical removal of organs which produce reproductive hormones) at minimum until maturity (3 years old), but all buyers are encouraged to keep their dogs intact lifelong. There are exceptions in the event that there is a justifiable health reason that requires surgical removal (retained testicle, pyometra), but health of the dog should always come before convenience of the owner.

3) A physical fenced area is required, and can be a kennel run or yard size. Proof of a fence must be available, whether through satellite images or a current photo.  Electric or underground fences don’t meet this requirement.  Physical fences must be complete enclosures with no gaps.

4) The puppy will reside indoors and receive routine veterinary care its entire life.

5) All pet puppies are AKC registered, but pets will be Limited AKC Registration, meaning that no offspring of the puppy may be registered. All other AKC benefits and opportunities are still available.

6) Ownership of puppies will be non-transferrable, meaning that if for any reason a family cannot keep their puppy, it must be returned to Woodruff Shelties, who will locate an acceptable new home. If the family would like to designate an alternate backup home that meets the above criteria, exceptions can be made.
